Population: 19,722 Total square miles: 38.965 (as of 2010 United States Census) Sparta, a township in Sussex County, New Jersey, has been increasing in population for at least the past couple of decades according to 2010 US Census data. The name Sparta likely came from Sparta, Greece. Historically, limestone, zinc and iron ore have been mined in the area and delivered out by the New Jersey Midland Railroad. The area was once a private resort community and has grown to a current membership of 2,600 families of largely year-round residents. “Sparta is served by the Skylands Connect bus, which provides service to Newton, Hamburg and Sussex.
